Venice & The Veneto, 2009

Jan and I went to Venice. First we went to Frankfurt, then Venice, then Lago Di Garda, and then Venice and Frankfurt. Lots of legs. We went to see the Venice Bienalle -- a huge art modern art show that has events throughout the city. It was overwhelming, and we had a blast.

So we drove around the West Coast, in a car. Marley, Meghan, Jan and I. San Francisco, Coast Redwoods, Crater Lake, Eugene, Eastern Idaho, Salt Lake, Bryce Cnayon, Nevada, Lake Tahoe, Monterey and home. 3800 miles on the rental car, in two weeks.

July 4, the big day. Who can't love big exploding picturey things in the sky? I went to the small town next to us, and set up on the hill. I like small-town fireworks cause it's all about the joy. Big city shows are glitzy, and try to represent the force of democracy (at least in my city -- DC). And you're never close enough to fell them. Small towns are funky, and they can't spend a lot, so they shoot one thing at atime -- made it easy for the photographer....

We all gathered in Ocean Grove to pay our respects to Rita Green -- a unique human being, and inspiration for us all. Funerals end up being for the living, not the dead, and we had, overall, a great time seeing each other, and telling old stories. It's a shame hat the occasion was so sad, but she had lived 91 very full years. Here's to you, Grandmother.
